Recently, being a part of the "green lifestyle" has become extremely popular. Now, whether or not you follow this trend to be trendy or because you care about living a sustainable lifestyle is your choice. My first week at my internship in Charleston has taught me that I have so much more to learn about recycling and going green in all aspects of life. Since you probably haven't heard about the event planning company I am working with, let me give you a little background. Blue Planet Green Events is a lovely event planning company located in the heart of Charleston, SC. Two young ladies, Toni and Lori, have been running the business for about four years now. Their vision was to orchestrate completely environmentally friendly weddings and events, and they are doing just that! With so much waste in the Food & Bev industry, these two wanted to use their client's events to change the negative impact that we have on our planet. In order to live up to their company's name and mission, Lori and Toni buy all local flowers, only cater from local businesses, compost any left over flowers food or plastics, recycle everything they can, and rarely ever throw anything out! They truly do emulate the green movement. I am seen as more of an assistant than an intern. I am responsible for keeping the company up to date on the social media forefront, doing online tasks the owners need me to do, setting up appointments, updating the website blog, and my favorite setting up the weddings and rehearsals.
Jumping on board with Blue Planet Green Events has been amazing so far. Everyday I am learning new tricks and experiences of the wedding business. I have also taught Lori and Toni a thing or two. I always get nervous when starting up a completely foreign experience, but I have really surprised myself this time! On the first day, I came up with some great on the spot ideas for their blogs, website, and social media sites. I have also been able to help with a lot of marketing aspects for an American Lung Association fundraising event that the company is putting on in Mid-June. My first day of set-up for a wedding rehearsal was this past saturday, and I kept myself busy. I want to please Lori and Toni as well as I can, so I will keep working hard and looking to the next task.
The overall feel of the company dynamic is extremely laid back and inviting. Both the owners and the two other interns I work with are very easy-going and fun to be around. There are always laughs just sitting around in the office chatting and working on whatever needs to be done for the week. I am extremely lucky to be working with this great company and with these great people. I am gaining daily knowledge about weddings, sustainability, and the processes that come when you combine the two. I can't wait for this coming Saturday when we have our next wedding at a place called Magnolia Plantation! I know it will be lots of enjoyable work that will all pay off for the couple!
Until Next Time!,
Jessica (the wedding intern!)
